She looked back and forth between the paper and the bones.

“Still don’t see it,” she admitted. “Everything is in order, I’d say. It’s a look back in time from our most recent ancestors to their um, ‘cousins,’ is the best analogy. I guess. With some kissing cousins action in-between.”

I laughed. “Close,” I said, “except backwards.”

“What do you mean?” she started stalking between the tables, her eyes darting back and forth, as if she had lost something and was frantic to find it.

“This diagram,” I held up the paper, “is not in reverse chronological order.”

“Sure, it is,” she said. “Early Gravettian goods go with Homo Sapiens Sapiens, then back to Chatelperronian with a mixed population of modern human and Neanderthalensis, then back to Mousterian, which was all neanderthal.”

“You would think,” I challenged her, “but no.”

“What do you mean ‘no’?”

I took another piece of paper and wrote:

Mousterian c. 300,000–30,000 > Chatelperronian c. 35,000–29,000 > Gravettian c. 28,000–22,000
